	Pawtucket, a small town in Rhode Island is where this
project is situated. Today, the town center feels abandoned. &#38;nbsp;


Stone fledged civic buildings tell us this town once held
significance. The converted warehouses along the river make us believe that in
recent years someone tried to revitalize the town to its pervious glory. 


The site of the project is situated along the river’s edge.
This particular spot has cycled through hundreds of years of substance to
different groups of people. The river, at one point contained a bounty of fish
and was used as both a summer home and river crossing point for the Narraganset
people. 


Pushed out by industry, in 1793 Pawtucket became the start
of the American textile industry by creating the first water powered mill,
Slater Mills. But as a foreshadowing of the past, this industry eventually was
left abandoned. Pushed out by labor and material costs, all that was left was
the empty warehouse factory buildings, river dams and polluted water.

Today, Slater Mills sits still in time as a historical
museum. It tells the story of a certain time in history, but leaves out the
part it played in damaging both the past and future. &#38;nbsp; Across the water is the site for this project. On small
strip of land the building is a mirrored image of its ghosted past. 


This new building, is a new extension of the museum. The two
are in conversation with one another. Slater Mills glorifies its industrial
revolution past, while the new building reinserts the remaining, untold history
of the site and looks into the future of industry, capital, environment. 


The building is empty of all but a modern day industrial
loom. Running on an annual schedule, the loom weaves for almost an entire year-
throughout that year the fabric that is produces becomes the building. Held by
a roofing super structure a set of tracks and rods house the curtain walls.
They divide the building creating new rooms, spaces and experiences. Eventually
the building is no longer empty, but completely full of the fabric. 


After a year, the building is released, the fabric, is withdrawn
and taken to a new home to have a second life. The process begins again.

	Coastal Maine currently relies on
ocean farming as a main point of industry. But as temperatures are rising, and sea
life populations are dwindling, we must think the future of aquatic
farming. Seaweed, an overlooked aquatic plant could be our answer. This
project is a seaweed processing facility and community center. It encourages
food cultivation and community engagement, honoring old tradition and welcoming
the new.

Sipayik (Pleasant Point), located on the northern coast of Maine lies next to the Bay of Fundy. A body of water which holds the borderline between the U.S. and Novia Scotia. This body of water is known for its extreme range of high/low tide lines.&#38;nbsp;
The site, just south of town center is an islet of land with a highway directly cutting through. The land holds a sacred landmark to the Passamaquoddy tribe, Split Rock.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

	Using two material systems: load bearing stone and stud frame timber. The buildings utilize each systems’ material properties: where the stone creates moments of solidity, the stud frame becomes the nimble parts between. At the same time, both systems are pushed beyond their conventional boundaries.&#38;nbsp;

From the outside, the program is divided into two buildings. The northern building is a food co-op, kitchen/dining and a community center, where the south building is the seaweed processing facility, greenhouse and educational center.&#38;nbsp;
Under the shared courtyard is an underground level, connecting the two buildings. It acts as a path of circulation, ocean dock access and seaweed storage. A processional staircase is the direct connection between the two spaces.&#38;nbsp;

Objects
can act as conduit for event and intention and relation.Objects
anchor and feed and create ritual.


Change
is reciprocal.We
effect and are affected by the cycles, and troubles of the forest.To
notice change requires repetition, habit.


A
little friction, a little discomfort, can heighten awareness.A
physical response to an object can circumvent logic.


Familiarity
and associations of comfort with a place can motivate maintenance.To
carry wooden objects back into the forest troubles an unproductive abstraction.Moments
in the forest may call for difference in the characteristics of the object.


Duration
matters in the forest.To spend time in the forest alters the care we afford to it


A
small group walks out into the forest, to stay for a while. They carry an
assortment of objects, some are recognizable:


Matches,
kindling, a camp kettle. A notebook, a pencil. And another set of wooden
objects which are less recognizable. 


They
have taken this walk many times. Over the years the forest has changed; drought
has left the ground thirsty, clearings from loggers have opened new barren
openings.&#38;nbsp; 


As
they walk through the forest, the unrecognizable objects that are braced
against the body, become heavy. Hands hook under straps to ease the burden and
contact to the body is adjusted. 


The
group arrives at a clearing by a stream. They set down their burdens and gather
somewood,
start a small fire. Each object holds a vessel. Water is heated and poured
inside. 


Each
member of the group takes their object and finds a seat within the clearing.

	This project explores the relationship between kinetic inflation and knit structure. Using two different materials: elastic and monofilament, the fabric is brought to life in unexpected ways based on each materials distinct characteristics.

	Standing at six meters tall and five meters wide, Silk Pavilion 2.0 explores the relationship between digital and biological fabrication through kinetic movement mimicking the natural patterns of the Bombyx Mori silkworm.&#38;nbsp;Comprised of three interrelated layers.Its innermost primary structure is comprised of one-dimensional, braided steel-wire ropes. Its secondary structure is a two-dimensional fabric on which the silkworms are positioned. The tertiary, three-dimensional structure is biologically spun with the output of 17,532 silkworms sourced from Teolo, Italy.


	The fabric layer of the pavilion was custom developed, emphasizing the relationship created between form and insect. The textile is comprised of a dissolvable yarn which reacted with silkworm.&#38;nbsp;

	As the silkworms enter the last stage of the fifth instar, they emit one last liquid excretion. This is an indication they are ready to spin.

	Textile dissolves when in contact with liquid excretion. Holes are created based on structural integrity of textile. Later, the silkworms patch holes with their spun silk.

The HLF production process utilizes a custom-built wet-spinning platform, consisting of an extrusion needle extending from a syringe pump and a rotary bath.

Weaving brought together both ancient and new practices to the wet lab. In this hybrid process, extruded novel fiber was woven into a monofilament warp. The fiber, required to stay wet, was also woven partially submerged, to be removed from loom and stored in H20&#38;nbsp;

	In collaboration with Ransmeier Inc.︎︎︎, a continuous circular structure was designed as fabricated. Warmly nicknamed the “arena,” it spanned the entire width of the room. Transforming the stark white room, the installation brought an inviting warmth and serenity to the chaos of the trade show.&#38;nbsp;
